Dane County yards aren’t flat. A slope from the driveway to the front door, a drop from the patio to the lawn, a hillside garden you can’t get to safely, all of it needs steps that stay level and don’t shift when the ground freezes and thaws. We build them into the site properly the first time, not set on top of it.
Verona is where the company started and where we still work out of. It also sits on some of the most awkward ground in Dane County. The land rises into a ridge belt that runs south out of Middleton through Verona and on into Fitchburg, so grade changes are normal here. And this is the driftless edge, where soil mostly drains fast, except in the low pockets left behind by glacial kettles, which stay wet all season. Two opposite problems, sometimes on the same property.
Ground Conditions
What Verona Yards Are Actually Dealing With
Grade changes on most lots. The ridge belt running south from Middleton passes right through here. Flat usable yard often has to be built, not found.
Fast-draining ground, with exceptions. Driftless soils shed water well. The old glacial kettles scattered around the Verona area don't, and a low spot that stays soft into June usually is one.
Newer subdivisions on sloped ground. The growth that came with Epic put a lot of houses on lots that needed cutting and filling first. Fill settles. Walls and grading on those lots are worth checking.
Thin cover over bedrock in places. In the Sugar River watershed the bedrock isn't buried under glacial till the way it is east of here, so how deep you can dig varies more than people expect.
