Dane County yards aren’t flat. A slope from the driveway to the front door, a drop from the patio to the lawn, a hillside garden you can’t get to safely, all of it needs steps that stay level and don’t shift when the ground freezes and thaws. We build them into the site properly the first time, not set on top of it.
The Johnstown moraine runs through this area, and Highway M crosses the ridge it left behind. A moraine is the outermost edge the last glacier reached. A terminal moraine is what a glacier dumps when it stops: everything it had been carrying, in no particular order. That is the ground under a lot of Oregon, and it is why digging here is less predictable than anywhere else we work.

Hummocky ground. Moraine topography is lumpy rather than sloped — short rises and hollows in no clear pattern. It is different from a hillside, and it is why flat usable space here usually has to be built.
Boulders in the till. End moraine deposits are mixed and in many places full of rock. A footing trench or post hole can hit something the size of an appliance with no warning from the surface.
Mixed material, not uniform soil. Moraine till is clay, silt, sand, gravel and rock together. Two holes twenty feet apart can come up completely different, which is why what worked on a neighbour’s yard is not a reliable guide here.
Hollows that hold water. Where blocks of buried ice melted out, they left depressions behind. Some are obvious ponds. Others are just a low spot in a lawn that never dries out.
