Dane County yards aren’t flat. A slope from the driveway to the front door, a drop from the patio to the lawn, a hillside garden you can’t get to safely, all of it needs steps that stay level and don’t shift when the ground freezes and thaws. Fitchburg sits on the southern end of the ridge belt that starts up at Middleton, so a lot of it is genuinely hilly. It's also on the glaciated side of the county, so the soil under that slope is clay and silt loam that holds water. Verona has slope with soil that drains.
